Powering connection through universal WiFi

Plymouth residents enjoy free WiFi

At Plymouth Housing, we are here to support people as they transform their lives after experiencing homelessness. That support goes beyond the most basic essentials — a roof overhead, a safe place to sleep, food to eat, or clothes to wear.

We also provide universal (free) WiFi at Plymouth buildings to help our residents reconnect with the fullness of life that so many housed people take for granted: calling a family member, applying for a job, going on a date, making a doctor’s appointment, or simply having the freedom to look something up online.

Just as importantly, the internet is a tool of agency. It allows each of us to make choices, to satisfy our curiosity, and to feel in charge of our own future.

Shawn, a resident at a Plymouth building in Belltown, told us he credits his WiFi connection to reconnecting with family members after many years — relationships he could not nourish while experiencing homelessness.

That’s why ensuring every Plymouth resident has Wi-Fi is about more than technology — it’s about dignity and possibility. We are especially grateful to our IT Director, Tim Jonesfor having the vision to make universal resident Wi-Fi possible, and to our Grants Director, Jessica Matheson, for executing on the details and bringing this vision to life.

Our IT team was recently honored at a staff recognition event

At Plymouth, our building staff provide daily, direct support to residents who experienced homelessness. But our mission is also advanced by those in administration — from IT to finance, from HR to accounting. Even when we are not in resident-facing roles, we are always asking: how can we create well-being for our residents through the work we do?

Plymouth’s Wi-Fi project is one answer to that question. By providing (literal) connection, we’re helping residents not just stabilize, but thrive — rediscovering their independence, their voice, and their sense of self.
