The experience of homelessness is different for everyone, but the negative impacts are tangible. Learn about all of the challenges Plymouth residents are overcoming now that they have safe, permanent homes.
I [was] homeless on and off for approximately 20 years... after about 2 years and many phone calls, I was offered a place called “Home.” …I count my blessings. I am reminded of lying on the streets half frozen, teeth crackling and at times lying back to back with my homies for body heat. I cried many times wishing for a better way... But hitting rock bottom, guess what? The only way now for me can be “up.” And that is the pathway I hope to achieve.
Home isn’t any one thing. It’s the start of many things. Find out what “home” means for Plymouth residents.
I have a lot of medical problems and for the first time I feel like I have a home. Not an apartment, but a place I can call my home. It took me about six months to feel that way, but you have no idea how great it is to feel safe again... I had given up and now I feel that I can move forward. I wouldn't trade this place for anything.
Recovering from homelessness follows no set timeline. Everyone’s needs are different, but personal support and a welcoming community provide a necessary foundation.
The most valuable community that often develops is when folks who have little room to trust allow themselves to lean into one another and make an unspoken pact to share friendship, love, and respect in opposition to a larger world that reflects so little of any of that back to them.
Plymouth’s mission goes beyond providing homes. Providing the support our residents need to leave homelessness behind not only helps them change their own lives, but also positively impacts the lives of those around them.
These are not human beings who are running away from the challenges of life and work and opportunity. These are human beings where opportunity has not come their way. And we've got to give them pathways to opportunity.
