“I have no time!” That was entrepreneur and author Russell Benaroya’s first response when his friend Terry Robinson suggested he participate in Seattle Dances, Plymouth Housing’s annual dance competition that raises funds to end homelessness. With apartment buildings throughout King County, Plymouth has 45 years of experience providing adults facing homelessness with the stable housing and support they need to thrive.
Terry, a business services professional, had danced himself in 2020, and it wasn’t hard for him to convince Russell. “We all know homelessness is a major problem. Plymouth’s approach is making a big difference,” Russell said. “I could get behind this challenge and advocate with purpose. That got me out of bed!”
After months of 6 a.m. dance rehearsals with professional dancer Eshita Jayaswal, Russell performed a Bollywood and Bhangra dance at Seattle Dances 2023, raising more than $80,000 for Plymouth in the process. Russell served as event Co-Chair in 2024 and now holds a leadership position in the Seattle Dances Alumni Committee.

This spring, Russell is taking on another impressive feat to support Plymouth. From April 4 through 14, he will be competing in the Marathon des Sables, a 250K ultramarathon across the Sahara Desert. Often called the toughest footrace on Earth, the race demands not only physical strength but also the resilience to endure extreme heat, carry all essentials on one’s back, and navigate harsh terrain.

Russell has volunteered at various Plymouth buildings over the years, sharing countless conversations with residents who have experienced homelessness. “I’ve learned that the struggle to find safety and stability can feel incredibly unrelenting and isolating,” Russell said. “I’m using this marathon to raise funds and awareness for Plymouth, which is dedicated to breaking the cycle of trauma and hardship that people experience when they are unhoused.”

Plymouth does not just provide shelter; we offer permanent homes combined with the critical services people need to rebuild their lives. By addressing the root causes of homelessness and fostering lasting stability, Plymouth empowers individuals to turn their own marathons of hardship into stories of hope and resilience.

“Every step I take in the desert will be fueled by the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home and a community to support them. Together, we can transform lives, one mile and one home at a time,” Russell added. Click here to support Russell’s epic journey with a donation to Plymouth Housing.
