United States Housing & Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan announced on March 13 that HUD has awarded nearly $201 million in special grants to 731 new local homeless programs across the country. Plymouth Housing Group is one of the three Seattle awardees, obtaining a $470,000 program grant for Plymouth’s new William Apartments.
Designed to fund a variety of homeless services, including critically needed emergency shelter, transitional housing, and permanent support for individuals and families, these highly-competitive grants are a significant part of the Obama Administration’s strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness.
“This funding represents the Obama Administration’s financial commitment to Opening Doors’ vision of ending chronic and Veterans homelessness by 2015, family homelessness by 2020, and setting us on a path to end all types of homelessness. It also reinforces our pledge to work in partnership with local communities to further innovative public-private partnerships,” said U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness Executive Director Barbara Poppe.
Plymouth will use the funds to support a portion of the administrative and programs costs at our newest building, the Williams Apartments, which is presently under construction and due to open in the winter of 2012. The building, located in the South Lake Union neighborhood, will be home to Plymouth’s new Recovery Support Program for homeless adults, including homeless veterans, who are intent on recovery from addiction.
