In August 2010, Plymouth opened two new building projects: A. L. Humphrey House, new construction, located on the corner of 1st and Cedar in Belltown, and the Scargo Apartments, a remodeled brick apartment building previously owned by Plymouth, also located in Belltown. Together, these two buildings will provide 128 units of housing for chronically-homeless people.
A.L. Humphrey House is named in honor of the father of Cindy Brettler. Cindy and her husband, Car Toys CEO Dan Brettler made a major gift to build the new apartments. The building is an attractive, modern apartment building containing 81 single-unit studio apartments, each equipped with a full kitchen and bath. Several units are handicap-accessible with roll in showers and handrails. The building incorporates many green features and meets Washington State Evergreen building standard. Plymouth’s goals for the building focus on energy and water conservation and improving the indoor air quality for the residents. In addition, Plymouth will embark on an ambitious incentive-based recycling program for residents. The building was designed by SMR Architects and the general contractor is MarPac Construction.

Featured will be the new rooftop deck with beautiful plantings and stunning views of the Space Needle and Elliott Bay. Also, Plymouth has created an artwork on the roof of the building at the request of local Condo owners whose homes look down on the building. Plymouth asked Joe Burmeister of Burmeister Studios to design an attractive rooftop art feature that would mitigate the view. His building top art work titled “There, From, Here” is (etc etc)

When Brettler House opens in the fall of 2010, it will provide supportive housing for formerly homeless people suffering from mental illness as well as other disabilities. Service and referral partners for the buildings include Seattle & King County Jail Health Services, Harborview Emergency Department and Psychiatric Emergency Services, Evergreen Treatment’s Reach Program and the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC). Plymouth will also work with the Chief Seattle Club to help identify Native American residents who will reside in the Scargo Apartments.
To help residents make a smooth transition from homelessness to permanent housing, Plymouth offers on-site “wrap around” support services such as one-on-one case management, mental health counseling, nursing services, employment counseling, and 24-hour staffing and security. A. L. Humphrey House will be Plymouth’s 12th residential building in the downtown core. The Scargo Apartments were bought in 1980 and this new project is a total remodel of the building which includes breaking through the wall into the next door Lewiston Apartments to create one larger building with a shared elevator, common room, staff offices and entry.
