We won’t be silent as new federal bill threatens housing and lives

Posted July 4, 2025

While many celebrate freedom and community this week, President Trump signed a sweeping tax bill into law — one that will have devastating consequences for the people we serve at Plymouth Housing.

This law slashes access to critical safety net programs — Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP — that people rely on to stay housed and healthy. It endangers funding for HUD and Continuum of Care. It adds $3.3 trillion to the deficit and threatens the systems that support those who have experienced homelessness from all walks of life — regardless of race, culture, orientation, or background.

Yes, the bill includes a small win: an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. But that gain is overwhelmed by the harm it does.

At Plymouth, we know that permanent supportive housing works. But it only works when we can build more housing and pair it with staffing and benefits for services. This bill puts that model — and our residents — at risk.

We’re speaking out. We’ve been in direct contact with our partners and Washington’s Congressional delegation. We’re especially grateful to Senators Murray and Cantwell and Representatives Jayapal, Smith, DelBene, and Strickland for standing up for our communities and defending what matters.

We’re also standing with our residents and with people who’ve experienced homelessness firsthand. Their voices must be at the center of this fight. They know what justice looks like. And we’re following their lead.

As the late Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis said reminded us: “Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble.” This is that time. And we will not back down.
