Tim has lived in his Plymouth apartment for just under a year. In fact, he’s eagerly looking forward to December, when he’ll celebrate twelve months of having a home after 25 years experiencing homelessness.
When asked how he likes his apartment, Tim responds, “It’s my little universe!” He gestures from his easy chair at the space he’s slowly filling with the comforts of home: a rug, colorful blankets, and many young plants that Tim has rescued.
“I’m a horticulturist,” Tim explains about the plants. When he was 25, he was told to get a hobby. He’d always liked plants, so he began collecting and caring for them. Before he knew it, he had 200 plants and trees—so he decided to go to school. After he obtained a horticultural degree, Tim went on to found a few nurseries.
Unfortunately, Tim fell into homelessness, and 25 years of life without a stable home took its toll. “This is probably the end of the line for me,” he says, referring to his recent health challenges. He shared that when he was living out of shelters and on the streets, he was in the hospital every other week for four or five days at a time. Now, Plymouth staff have helped him get a caregiver and although his health remains challenging, he’s slowly but surely improving.
Tim keeps an optimistic outlook and enjoys his new home and community. Coincidentally, he and his best friend Rickey moved out of homelessness and into apartments next to one another at about the same time, and he can be regularly found at community events or trimming the trees in the building gardens.
Tim’s smile regularly lights up the days of Plymouth staff and fellow residents. “My whole life, my whole well being, is better being here at Plymouth,” he proudly says.
We look forward to congratulating Tim on his one-year anniversary of leaving homelessness behind. We’re so glad he’s part of our community.
