Key to Hope: Cultivating Compassion

Wow—thank you for a record-breaking Key to Hope! On Oct. 13, more than 1,000 members of our community gathered at the Hyatt Regency Seattle for our 20th annual luncheon. To everyone who donated during this special event or made a gift in lieu of attendance, thank you for supporting Plymouth’s proven and compassionate approach to ending homelessness. Together, we raised over $1.5 million—a new record!

Dr. Nadine Burke Harris’ moving keynote address inspired us to practice empathy and compassion in our response to homelessness. Watch the recorded livestream of Friday’s event (available for a limited time):

Keynote Speaker

This year’s luncheon featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. An award-winning physician, researcher, and public health leader, Dr. Burke Harris has dedicated her career to serving vulnerable communities and addressing the root causes of health disparities.

Many people who experience homelessness are living with the long-term impacts of childhood trauma, which adversely affects health outcomes throughout their lives. Dr. Burke Harris’ keynote explored best practices surrounding trauma-informed care. How can a safe, stable community—like one that Plymouth provides—be a crucial part of advancing the health and well-being of our most vulnerable neighbors?

A pediatrician and former surgeon general of California, Dr. Burke Harris is known for her TED talk “How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime.”

Who does Plymouth serve?

We provide our residents with furnished studio apartments and services such as health care and counseling. Each Plymouth resident has a unique personal history, but they also have a lot in common: 95% have a disability, 61% are 55 or older, 15% are veterans, and 47% are people of color. All 1,200 are people who previously experienced homelessness for many years, and they are bright, resilient members of our community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dress code for this event?

The recommended dress code for this event is business casual attire.

What is a Table Captain?

Our Table Captains are individuals who volunteer to host a table of guests (10 per table). Becoming a Table Captain is free!

Table Captains can also become Table Sponsors by purchasing all of the seats at their table and inviting guests to double their impact.

Can I register if I don't have a Table Captain?

Absolutely! Everyone is welcome to attend Key to Hope, even without a Table Captain. When you register, just write “N/A” in the Table Captain field.

Is it really free attend?

To make Key to Hope as inclusive as possible, attendees are not required to pay for a ticket to access the event. However, this is also a major fundraiser for Plymouth Housing: to help us reach our fundraising goal, we suggest a donation of $150 at the event.

What does Plymouth Housing do?

Plymouth Housing ends homelessness one person at a time. We provide housing and supportive services to adults who have experienced homelessness for 2, 10, or 20 years. Currently, we have 18 buildings across King County, serving nearly 1,200 residents served each year. Learn more about us on our website.

How else can I get involved in Plymouth's mission?

We are always looking to engage new Plymouth supporters! Check our volunteer page for current volunteer opportunities. You can also learn more about our work by following us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
